UVA is implementing the strategic Inclusive Excellence (IE) framework to synergize and support our collective diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts. The collaborative IE model for organizational change has been a national movement in postsecondary education since 2005 and calls for higher education to address diversity, inclusion, and equity as critical to achieving excellence.

The mission of the University of Virginia's Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (EOCR) is to ensure equal opportunity and to protect the civil rights of all University community members through proactive outreach, education, and effective response and resolution. Any members of the University community who feel that they have been subjected to discrimination, harassment, or retaliation in violation of the Preventing and Addressing Discrimination and Harassment Policy or the Preventing and Addressing Retaliation Policy may file a complaint with EOCR. The University encourages every member of our community to promptly report any instance of abuse or mistreatement of anyone by University personnel, including workplace bullying, to appropriate supervisors, unit heads, department managers or deans. The UVA Democracy Initiative Center for the Redress of Inequity through Community Engaged Scholarship (aka The Equity Center) represents a new model of community engaged scholarship, imagining the university as not just an anchor institution, but also an authentic community resource. We work across multiple sectors in the Charlottesville regional community, providing holistic support to organizations focused on affordable housing, food insecurity, youth and education, transportation, jobs and wages and healthcare. We partner with nonprofits, grassroots organizations, and community leaders to elevate their voices in decision making efforts. Our community partnerships and advocacy within the University work in tandem to create a more equitable culture.

  • Voices for Equity:The calls to action made by students, faculty, and community members through protests, petitions, and working groups represent decades spent on this very task. To credit those activists and to contextualize the present moment, we collected 50 years of documents addressing racial inequity at the University of Virginia written by students, faculty, staff, and working groups, analyzed them for common themes, and created an interactive library format to share our findings and start a conversation.
